Want to work in the studio but can’t commit to a regular 8-week class? Prefer doing your own thing and have the experience but not the equipment? Then, Independent Studio was made for you!
You must understand the basics of working with clay and go through a studio orientation with us so that we know you are familiar with our procedures. We do everything we can to protect our students' work, and this includes meeting with artists who wish to work alone in the studio. You'll need to have either taken a class with us before or have similar experience.
You'll have access to the studio 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. 4 a.m. and feel like glazing? Go for it. Have a craving to throw at midnight...the studio's all yours. You'll receive an access code that will make sure you're safe and that no one but students can get in the building. You'll be allowed to work during regularly scheduled classes, but students in the class receive priority use of the equipment, so you might want to check out our class schedule.
Participants in the independent studio program must purchase their clay from Good Dirt. Our clay fee includes not only the clay itself but also the glaze and firing, so we lose quite a bit of money if you bring in your own clay, and we won't know it's safe at our kiln temp.
Independent studio artists must register for at least two months initially. The first two months and the first bag of clay cost $185. Additional clay may be purchased as needed at $35.33/bag which includes the new 8% sales/SPLOST taxes, and additional months of studio time are $75/month. Students requiring more than a single shelf space might consider applying for a resident artist studio.
Note: If you are signing up for Independent Studio for the first time, you will need to select both First Two Month Independent Studio Fee AND a Bag of Clay to complete your order.
