Good Dirt Clay Studio

Located in Athens, Georgia, Good Dirt is a community clay studio with year-round pottery classes for adults and children and a gallery with a fine selection of work by professional artists.  If you have ever been interested in how pottery and ceramics are made, we hope you'll drop in and see us.  Our focus on community = something for everyone!

The paparazzi caught Rob in the shot, much to his chagrin.  I still think he looks pretty darn happy in his element.  If memory serves, he was playing Zeppelin at the time - classic.  So, that's his "Zeppelin face".  I love this photo because of how totally at peace he looks. Plus, how often does a fish photo-bomb you?

Music lessons in athens, ga...

Rob Sutherland has been playing music since he was 8 years old.  He started out on the cello and quickly realized that music would be in his life forever.  Since then, he's picked up mandolin, guitar, violin, had a brief thing with a trombone, and secretly wants to learn how to play the phanduri, oud and shamisen.  Oh, ok. He wants to learn to play everything.  Rob is an active member of the Athens Symphony and played for awhile with the Dekalb Symphony (but the commute - oy!), teaches music classes and private lessons out of Good Dirt, has to be torn away from local jams, has had the pleasure of playing with amazing local musicians (name drop...Kishibashi), attends "professional development" (read: all-day, all-night playing, learning, and jam sessions ie the best time ever) at Kaufman Kamp in Tennessee and Accademia Mandolino in Italy (when frequent flyer points allow and our wallet won't cry).  Basically, music is his language and his passion - one that he'd like to pass on to you.

Private lessons are available on cello, mandolin, guitar and violin from the absolute brand-new beginner to the advanced student looking to break through some barriers.  Half-hour lessons are $30 and hour-long lessons are $50.  Whether you'd just like to able to play your favorite songs or want to dig into some music theory, we can help.  Lessons will push you at your edge, but never feel overwhelming or impossible.  From how to hold your pick and how chords are built to nailing (finally!) Bach's Sonatas & Partitas, we've got you covered.  Think you might be interested?  Fill out the form below and we can get started.  We're creating the lesson schedule for the upcoming school year and have a few slots still available.

If all of that sounds like too much and you're just looking for a fun, low-pressure way to play, check out our "Old Time String Band" under the "Classes" tab.  A nicer, more welcoming group of people you couldn't find.  We get together, learn, play, laugh, and just in general enjoy the music.
