What can I expect in a workshop?

Workshops are the perfect way to be creative in a very low-stress environment and make something that you'll be able to use everyday.

Workshops are 2 hours long. Our instructors will guide you through everything step by step and be there to help you as you create.

During a wheel workshop, we'll show you the basics of throwing and then you're free to give it a shot and see what you can make. Usually, you'll end up with 2 or 3 small, bowl shapes. For whatever reason, hands usually want to make bowls.

In a handbuilding workshop, your instructor will show you how to make a specific project that you've chosen ahead of time (such as a bowl, a mug, etc). Everyone in the group will make the same piece.

After you've created your piece(s), you'll leave them with us to fire in our kilns, dip in our glaze combination of the month and fire in the kilns again. This means that your pieces are foodsafe, microwave and dishwasher safe and professionally finished. We'll then pack them up for you and give you a call or an email to let you know that your beautiful new pottery is ready. The turnaround time is about 3.5-4 weeks.

What is the difference between a handbuilding workshop & and pottery wheel workshop?

Handbuilding Workshop: Handbuilding involves working on a table with your hands and no motorized equipment. It is a slower, more deliberate and less messy process. You also end up having "success" at an earlier part in your education. This means that you'll get less dirty and end up with a piece that's likely bigger and more even than working on the wheel. For our handbuilding workshops, we'll discuss potential projects ahead of time and then the instructor will show everyone in your group how to make that particular piece. Handbuilding is accessible to all ages, so it's a great choice for field trips or groups of adults coming with children.

Pottery Wheel Workshop: The pottery wheel is motorized and spins as you work with the clay. There is a steeper learning curve and it tends to be messier and more immediate. I'm also biased (as a wheel teacher) and think it's more fun! During a wheel workshop, we'll show you the basics of throwing and then you're free to give it a shot and see what you can make. Usually, you'll end up with 2 or 3 small, bowl shapes. For whatever reason, hands usually want to make bowls.

How to choose: Handbuilding is a slower, but more precise technique for beginners and you're more likely to get a bigger and more even piece than the first time on the wheel. But, as a wheel girl, I'm biased and think the wheel is more fun.

When deciding which kind of workshop is best for your group, ask yourself is the experience (the go for the pottery wheel) or the final product (choose handbuilding) is the more important aspect for your group. What would work best for the personalities in your group- slow, precise and deliberate (handbuilding) or fast, messy and immediate (wheel)? And, finally, what are the ages in your group? You'll need a lot of dexterity and strength to try the wheel. It's best for adults and children who are at least 10 years old.

How many people can you accommodate at a time?

For Pottery Wheel workshops, we can host 14 guests at a time. We are happy to set up back-to-back workshops to accommodate larger groups. We often do this for sororities, and it's no problem at all.

For handbuilding workshops, we can host up to 20 people at a time. We can host back-to-back workshops to accomodate larger numbers. Often, this is necessary for large school groups with UGA or sorority groups.

Can I bring food &/or drinks?

You're welcome to bring whatever you'd like. When working with clay, your hands will be covered in well, clay, so you'll only really be able to eat after your workshop and drink during the decorating portion.

While you can BYOB alcohol, we don't allow drinking while working on the pottery wheel. Hands are slippery and we've had too many broken bottle accidents.

If you're hosting a party, just remember that your workshop lasts 2 hours and will need to include eating time.

What is the cost?

$350 for up to 8 people. Every additional person is $35/each. There is a $150 deposit to secure your date and time that is applied towards your total.

Do you do kid's parties?

Due to the fact that we are a working studio with fragile student pieces pretty much surrounding the space, we’ve taken a step away from children’s parties due to damage to our student work and the studio. We truly have a heart for introducing the arts to children and encouraging their creativity. We don’t want to have to give up this side of the studio - as I think it’s so incredibly important. We just also need to protect the work of our studio artists and show them that we value and respect them and their work. We hope this makes sense and that you all understand.

Do you offer scholarships for school field trips & underfunded organizations?
